Los Angeles City Council Unanimously Approves EIR and Other Agreements to Officially Approve AEG's Development of Farmers Field and Convention Center Modernization While Paving the Way for Jobs and Economic Development

LOS ANGELES, CA - The City Council scored a big victory for the people of Los Angeles today with its unanimous approval of the agreements for construction of Farmers Field and modernization of the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Council's approval of the Environmental Impact Report and other entitlements to provide complete City consent to move forward on the groundbreaking project, that also includes two new parking structures along with the 72,000-seat stadium and Convention Center expansion, once a long-term lease with an NFL team is secured.

"We want to thank the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa, Council President Herb Wesson, Councilmember Jan Perry and the entire City Council in addition to City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana, Chief Legislative Analyst Gerry Miller and Director of Planning Michael LoGrande for their leadership and vision," said Timothy J. Leiweke, President & CEO, AEG. "Everyone invested a tremendous amount of time hard work, thought and energy. Together with City Leadership and City Staff, we listened to and received input from citizens during more than 200 community meetings to create a very comprehensive and aggressive EIR that will set new standards for all future projects.

The fact that Farmers Field will be privately financed with AEG taking 100% of the risk gives us the opportunity to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles after nearly 20 years. Few Cities can offer that kind of opportunity today in sports.

Finally, having the ability thru smart planning to create a true world-class point of destination with Farmers Field while fixing the Los Angeles Convention Center and to do all of this without risk to the City's general fund, creating tens of thousands of jobs and great economic benefit to Los Angeles is truly smart planning at its best," Leiweke added.

"Today is a significant day in Los Angeles history," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "Today, we demonstrated what we can accomplish when the entire City family joins together with private partners to transform our City. This project means not only a potential NFL stadium but also a modernized Convention Center and thousands of new jobs for LA."

The Council voted to grant various land use approvals, including the Specific Plan, Sign District Ordinance, Development Agreement for the Event Center and Street Vacation to build the new hall over Pico Blvd. It also amended the STAPLES Center and Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment District (LASED) Development Agreements and the LASED Specific Plan to be consistent with the Event Center approvals. With these, AEG has the formal City approvals to proceed with the project once an NFL franchise has made a long term commitment to play at Farmers Field.

"For nearly two years, we have worked in a transparent and thoughtful manner to develop a project that protects the taxpayers, creates over 30,000 new jobs for Los Angeles, generates millions in new tax revenue for our city, and enables us to finally update our Convention Center and make it the world-class venue we deserve," said Councilwoman Jan Perry, Chair of the Council's Ad Hoc Stadium Committee. "I have seen the enormous impact that AEG's developments have had on the city. From STAPLES Center to L.A. LIVE to the Convention Center hotel, we have seen the positive evolution of the Sports and Entertainment District which has been the catalyst for tens of thousands of jobs, contributed to the revitalization of downtown, and have done so while being a good neighbor and partner with the local non-profit and labor community. With this development agreement, the City has again secured a good deal that will continue this positive growth in our urban core and the surrounding areas and we will finally bring football back to Los Angeles."

"This project will bring thousands of jobs to our residents and continue the economic renaissance of our downtown neighborhoods. I appreciate the strong vote of confidence from my Council colleagues. Their leadership has moved the ball forward in making Farmers Field a reality."

As with their other prior developments, AEG, in partnership with a broad based city-wide coalition of grassroots and community-based non-profit organizations, employers, business organizations, labor unions, residents and elected and government officials, has created a comprehensive and far-reaching Community Benefits Program tied to Farmers Field which will provide critical resources to tens of thousands of youth and families living in low-income, disadvantaged communities within the City of Los Angeles.

Among the commitments in the wide-ranging agreement, funded entirely by AEG, are the establishment of local hiring goals to maximize employment opportunities to low-income residents in the surrounding community; programs to maximize the recruitment of Small Business, Minority, Women and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise participation in the development and operations of Farmer Field; funding of streetscape and other community improvements; the establishment of a Living Wage Goal for all project jobs; Green Space, Parks & Recreation funding; Funds to establish Job Training Programs; Neighborhood Protection & Land Use Analysis Plans; and establishment of Youth Programs including College Scholarship and Intern Programs, Summer Youth Employment Programs and Job Shadowing Programs among others.

The project has a wide range of sustainability commitments from design to operations. Both the New Hall, which will be a L.E.E.D Gold facility, and Farmers Field will include water and energy efficiency measures, use of recycled materials, low carbon footprint concrete as well as requirements to divert solid waste. In the operation of Farmers Field, AEG will adhere to sustainable purchasing practices, ongoing measurement of sustainability results and environmental messaging to its patrons.

AEG is also undertaking a pioneering commitment to offset all greenhouse gas emissions from spectator trips to Farmers Field through funding of local measures that reduce GHG emissions, on-site design and operational features, and if needed, through the purchase of carbon offset credits. Farmers Field will not only be the greenest NFL stadium in design and operations, AEG has committed to undertake automobile trip reduction measures to be the NFL stadium with passenger trip ratio that is no more than 90% of the next best NFL stadium in the country. The cornerstone of all these efforts, is AEG's funding to double the capacity of Metro's Pico Station which is just one block from Farmers Field. This station serves the Blue Line and the Expo Line which are two of the nation's most heavily travelled light rail lines. Along with the Redline station just a few blocks away, the proximity to transit will provide a real option for fans to leave their cars at home.
